In April 1995, the NICHD cosponsored a state of the science conference, with the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, the National Institute of Mental Health, and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, to assess the state of the science in autism research, identify gaps in knowledge, and make recommendations to the NIH about promising areas for future research. This scientific report describes the conference and the topics discussed at the conference.
