Hydrologic Conditions
Average Hydrographs of Stations on the Yukon RiverThe pattern of water exchange between the carbon-rich water in the sloughs of the Yukon Flats or from major tributaries draining wetlands and the silt-laden water in the main-stem river is a major aspect of understanding the water-quality of the Yukon River. To bracket conditions, intensive sampling campaigns were conducted during high water in early June and a second during lower water in late August. This timing misses any initial "flush" of constituents from the Flats or wetland tributaries that may occur during the hydrograph rise in late May (see figure), as safety precludes sampling prior to peak flows due to ice, debris, etc. Nonetheless, sampling did occur during the period when the river was flooding into the sloughs (in June) and a period when the river is receiving water from the sloughs (in August). Note that there is not a distinct secondary peak in the late summer from glacier melt. |
