I am a Scientist in the Computer Science Research group of the Computer Science and Mathematics Division at the US Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). I joined ORNL in August 2003. My work at ORNL straddles both basic and applied distributed systems research. On the applied side of things, I work on building a distributed computing/data management solution for the DOE's Spallation Neutron Source. From a basic research standpoint, I work on: (i) novel distributed storage systems for scientific data management and (ii) CenterSS, an effort to exploit the entire HPC center storage and beyond in order to improve data availability and alleviate I/O bandwidth bottleneck issues in leadership class supercomputing facilities.

February 5th, 2008: Received an "Outstanding Mentor Award" from ORNL and the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education
November 8th, 2007: Chao Wang, intern, who worked with me through the ORISE Astro program, is one of three students awarded the prestigious SC Fellowship, ACM/IEEE-CS HPC Ph.D. Fellowship. The fellowship was awarded, in part, for his previous/planned work on the CenterSS project.

My recent non-fiction read, "The Scientists-- A history of science told through the lives of its greatest inventors" by John Gribbin
This involved research and development on Data Grid tools and techniques in conjunction with Argonne's Distributed Systems Laboratory. My doctoral work was on Globus/GriPhyN Data Grid development - built techniques to locate data in highly replicated environments; developed performance prediction strategies for bulk Data Grid transfers aiding data transfer schedules; developed co-allocation middleware enabling parallel and fast access to replicated data, etc. More details in the publications page.
A distributed OS for Linux. More details in the publications page. |
Below are a few software downloads, stuff that I've worked on and off since sometime now - Most of them could be good starting points for future work, reference or simple know how...
Statistical Tools for Predicting Bulk GridFTP Data Transfers. Parallel Downloading of Bulk GridFTP Transfers Linux Kernel with PODOS (Distributed OS) patches. Sample Framework for Distributed Protocol Development.
