Medicare

In 2005, AARP Nebraska, Nebraska Area Agency on Aging Association, the Nebraska Health and Human Services System, the Nebraska Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP), the Social Security Administration (SSA), UNL Extension, UNL Center on Children, Families and the Law, and NHCA joined together to form a statewide coalition of professional organizations, volunteers and state agencies to educate and assist the Medicare population in preparing for the new prescription drug benefit.

checkmarkThe drug benefit is voluntary. No one HAS to sign up for it. But, it is important to know that you will pay a 1% higher premium for each month you delay signing up after May 15, 2006 or after the seven month open enrollment time period after you are eligible for Medicare. (The higher premium does not apply if drug coverage you had from another source is lost and it was at least as good as the Medicare Drug Benefit) That is why it is SO IMPORTANT to become informed about the new benefit and take your time in making a decision about whether the benefit is right for you or not.

Chances are you have heard Medicare's prescription drug program (also known as Medicare Part D) can be confusing and overwhelming. That is why organizations and leaders are critical partners in an effort to raise the awareness of the benefit and to provide outreach and education to Medicare beneficiaries. Resources to help you understand the Medicare drug program and can be found through links to other key sites. The information provided will assist you or a loved one in making educated decisions about the Medicare drug benefit plan.
