You Tube Has Speech-to-Text Functionality...and it Works
This new speech-to-text technology has been applied to campaign videos from John McCain and Barack Obama as well as non-campaign produced clips. The search box is found on YouTube You Choose page. (It's on the lower left area of the page.) Visitors can enter words such as "Iraq, "Global Warming," and "Free Trade."

Virginia Statewide Preparedness Survey
The Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) has created a short online survey to assess the public's perception of their level of preparedness. The study will help determine Virginians' awareness of potential hazards and threats in their area, the steps they have taken to get ready for disasters and the level of participation in disaster response volunteer groups.

Congress Passes Legislation for Training of Realtime Writers

On July 31, 2008, Congress passed the Higher Education Opportunity Act. Included in the Act is NCRA’s Training for Realtime Writers language, which creates a competitive grant program to train realtime writers to provide both captioned information and communication access for the 30 million Americans who are deaf and hard-of-hearing.
