Guided Tours at the USGS National Center

Visits to the USGS Visitors Center are in three parts:

Introduction
A visit begins with general introduction to the U.S. Geological Survey and a 15-30 minute slide presentation or video on a selected topic (disaster preparedness, volcanic eruptions, earthquake studies, and water issues such as pollution or flooding are just a few of the topics).

Hands-On Room
This room contains computers, microscopes, a water flume, and other materials for hands-on activities. Note: groups should be prepared to break up into smaller groups of two or three activities in the Hands-On Room.

On site "Field Trips"
The map printing plant is the most popular place to visit within the million-foot complex. Laboratories may be visited upon request, depending upon the size and interests of the group.

Many of the hallway displays and exhibits that can be seen on self-guided tours are also explained during the guided tours. During fair weather months, visitors can learn about orienteering, monitor the local water table at the water well, or examine large rock specimens from local quarries.
