Drawing Depicting Miner Cutting Log A fourteen year veteran underground coal miner, Heather Swiney, shares her tips on setting temporary posts on pillar workings. To reduce personal exposure and to get the support in place quickly, she tells us:
"Always have your timbers pre-measured and sawed before the coal is removed." She also warns: "A person should never turn their back to a pillar that has just been cut on. This will limit the time a person is in a life threatening position."

Since nearly half of her underground experience has been spent in coal pillar extraction work, she should know what she is talking about.
