  Wind and Hydropower Technologies

Wind & Hydropower Technologies

Hydroelectric power contributes about 12% of the electrical generating capability in the United States and nearly 20% of the world's electricity. Compared with other energy sources, hydropower produces very small amounts of solid and liquid wastes and atmospheric emissions. Hydropower helps reduce greenhouse gases by offsetting electricity generation that uses carbon-based fuels.

Despite its advantages, hydroelectric power generation has declined in recent years due to environmental requirements that include protection of fish passing dams, improvement of water quality, and provision of additional river flows for downstream aquatic habitat.

Advanced Hydropower Technology

DOE's Wind Energy Program efforts have culminated in some of industry's leading products today and have contributed to record-breaking industry growth.
