Overview. Electrical training courses focus on fundamental knowledge, theory of equipment operation, and practical maintenance and troubleshooting skills for Coast Guard Electrician Mates. Courses include Electrician's Mate "A" School and a wide variety of "C" Schools. All students attending courses must have an updated Common Access Card and know their CAC Personal Identification Number (PIN). Failure to do so will cause an unnecessary training delay.
Electrician's Mate "A" school is a 19 week intensive course of instruction designed to train non-rated personnel to perform the duties of a Coast Guard Third Class Electricians Mate. The American Council on Education (ACE) has evaluated this course and recommends the following credits in the Lower-Division Baccalaureate/Associate degree category: three (3) semester hours in basic electricity, three (3) semester hours in AC & DC circuit theory, three (3) in electrical power distribution, three (3) in electrical circuits troubleshooting and maintenance, one (1) in industrial safety, and one (1) in blueprint reading. Recommended pre-reporting studies/tips. All "A" school students must complete their EPME's for E-4 prior to graduation to be eligible for promotion to third class petty officer upon graduation. Begin your studies as early as possible. EPME study help is available at TCYorktown after you arrive. See your class advisor for details. Students are highly encouraged to brush up on their basic math and algebra skills prior to arrival (Try your Educational Services Officer or local library if you need help). Students are also urged to review their E-4 EPQ's for EM.
