USGS Indiana District Adopts White River

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has developed the Adopt-A-River Program that encourages volunteer groups to "adopt" a stream reach and foster its long-term health through river-cleanup activities. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Indiana District has adopted White River between the Broad Ripple Dam and Kessler Blvd. in Indianapolis. Volunteers from the USGS, their families, and friends donate two Saturdays a year for a river-cleanup along the adopted stream reach. During these river-cleanup days, some volunteers walk along the stream banks collecting trash (beverage containers, bait boxes, tires, drums). Other volunteers, working from canoes, collect trash in the river and transport the collected debris to the trash-removal locations.

The first USGS river cleanup was held on Saturday, May 22, 1999. During this one-day cleanup, the group filled more than 140 large refuse bags with trash collected along the river. When the group returned for their second and third river cleanups in the Fall of 1999 and Spring of 2000, it was apparent that their efforts had made a notable improvement to the adopted stream reach.
