The Heart Truth Ambassador
Image of The Heart Truth Ambassador, Mrs. Laura Bush

Image of President Bush and Mrs. Laura Bush Mrs. Laura Bush has been the ambassador for The Heart Truth campaign since Valentine's Day 2003.  Since then, as part of her Women's Health and Wellness Initiative, Mrs. Bush has been leading the Federal government's effort to give women a personal and urgent wake-up call about their risk of heart disease.

"With the many risk factors for heart disease, our greatest risk is ignorance. So I encourage every one of you to go home, pull out your favorite red dress, and tell every woman you know that heart disease doesn't care what you wear" — Mrs. Laura BushShe notes that "Like many women, I assumed heart disease was a man's disease and cancer was what we would fear the most.  Yet heart disease kills more women in our country than all forms of cancer combined.  When it comes to heart disease, education, prevention, and even a little red dress can save lives."

A signature element of the Mrs. Bush's involvement with The Heart Truth is talking to women across the country at community hospital events featuring the experiences of women living with heart disease.  This personal outreach makes a difference. Media coverage surrounding Mrs. Bush's visit to a Heart Truth hospital event in Kansas City, MO, is widely credited with saving the life of one woman who was prompted to go to the hospital after experiencing symptoms of a heart attack.

Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in May 2005.
