Volunteer Opportunities for Youth

The following is a list of agencies that have volunteer opportunities for youth.

Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Library System. Are you 12 to 18 years old? Dependable? Enthusiastic? Able to follow directions? The library is looking for teens to help with the 2008 Summer Reading Program. Successful applicants will serve a set amount of hours each week in May, June and July. Schedules will vary by library. If you are interested in being a Summer Assistant ask a staff member at your local library for an application.

Volunteer position: Summer Reading Program Assistant
Location: Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Library System (we have 16 branches throughout Albuquerque and Bernalillo County)
Age: 12-18
Dates: May - July
Days of the week: Monday - Saturday; you can work our your individual schedule with the library at which you volunteer
Duties: Help at the Summer Reading Desk, keep track of statistics, hand out prizes, sign people up for Summer Reading

Albuquerque Meals on Wheels, 5901 Harper N.E. Pam Webb, Pam-volunteer@mow-nm.org, 505-823-8061. We have a variety of summer volunteer opportunities for teens:
Kitchen volunteers needed Monday - Friday (any combination of days); 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Volunteers help package meals for distribution, etc. Minimum age: 14
Office volunteers needed Monday - Friday (any combination of days); 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Volunteers assist with labeling, collating, filing, answering phones, mailings, data entry, client intake assistance. Minimum age: 14
Should a parent be interested in volunteering with their child, we also are in need of volunteer drivers, Monday through Friday (or any combination of days), 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Volunteers will pick up meals; check them for accuracy or discrepancies; deliver them to the assigned route; provide social interaction for clients (this may be the only “friendly face” they see each day); report anything unusual about clients (i.e., needing assistance of some type) to Meals on Wheels office.

Albuquerque Rescue Mission, 525 Second S.W.   Kip Vaughn, kvaughn@albqrescue.org, 346-4673, ext. 237, AND Vicki Whitby, vickiw@albqrescue.org, 346-4673, ext. 222.  A Christian ministry that provides food, shelter, training, clothing, education, mentoring and Biblical counsel to the homeless and near homeless population in the Albuquerque area, http://www.abqrescue.org. Volunteers serve food during breakfast and evening meals. Volunteers under the age of 15 must be accomanied by a responsible adult.

 

Casa Esperanza, 1005 Yale N.E. Angelica Medina, amedina@casaesperanzanm.org, 277-9880.  We provide a home away from home for families facing cancer, http://www.casaesperanzanm.org. We have plenty of volunteer opportunities for youth during the summer months. Minimum age of volunteers is 16. Volunteer help needed anytime Monday thru Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Duties: help clean carpets, windows, refrigerators/stoves/microwave ovens, perform yard work, set up rooms and light office work (e.g., filing, answering phones).


City of Albuquerque Animal Care Center, 8920 Lomas N.E. James Hallinan, jhallinan@cabq.gov, 379-9396. Youth over the age of 15 can volunteer. Under the age of 15, must be accompanied by an adult age 18+. Volunteers interact with the animals and/or provide customer service.


City of Albuquerque Biological Park Education Program, 903 Tenth S.W.  Cathy Wylie, cwylie@cabq.gov, 764-6245. Volunteer opportunities at Albuquerque Aquarium, Rio Grande Botanic Garden, Rio Grande Zoo and Tingley Beach. Visit their website at http://www.cabq.gov/biopark/common/Volunteers.html. Minimum age is 14 for some of the opportunities.


City of Albuquerque Open Space Division. Jodi Hedderig, jhedderig@cabq.gov, 897-8865 AND Jim Sattler, jsattler@cabq.gov, 452-5200. Provide opportunities for the public to participate in the conservation of public open space, http://www.cabq.gov/openspace. The minimum age for unescorted children is 16 years old. For escorted children it is dependent on the project difficulty.


ECHO (Economic Council Helping Others), 300 Menaul N.W. Kirk Denetclaw, echodclaw@spinn.net, 242-6777. Volunteers pack food boxes for distribution to low-income population, http://www.echoinc.org. Hours of operation are Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Youth under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

 

Maxwell Museum of Anthropology. Volunteer needed to assist with our summer children's program, July 14-18. Help needed 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Monday thru Wednesday, and 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Thursday & Friday. The program will take place at the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology located on UNM's main campus. Volunteer will assist with the operation of our day camps, facilitation of activities, and supervision of campers. Minimum age: 15. N.M. Animal Friends. Jess Langer, nmafvolfoster@aol.com, 881-7297. Volunteers needed to help at adoption clinics on Saturdays at local PetsMart Stores. Duties: help with set-up and tear-down, greet customers, walk dogs, http://www.nmaf.org. Minimum age: 14


Rio Grande Food Project, 600 Coors N.W.  Ann Wegman, 836-9558, David Whiteley, rgfp@comcast.net, 934-5567(c).  Provide emergency food to individuals and families, http://www.rgfp.org. We have a variety of volunteer opportunities available as follows for volunteers age 15 and older:
* Pack food boxes for distribution to clients on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday, between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. OR the third Saturday of each month from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
* Unload food from delivery truck on Tuesday and Thursday, between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
* Perform data entry at any of the times listed above.


Roadrunner Food Bank, 2645 Baylor Drive S.E. Christina Alexander, christina@rrfb.org, 349-8825. Volunteers needed to repackage bulk food items, http://www.rrfb.org. Youth under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

SAFE House Thrift Store, 1301 San Mateo N.E., Suite C. Crystal Hollon, chollonwca@hotmail.com, or Marva Boger at 265-9233, http://www.safehousenm.org. Thrift store volunteers Monday through Friday, between 9:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. AND Saturdays between 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Tasks to be performed: sorting through donations, cleaning store, tagging and pricing items, assisting customers.  Volunteers also needed for Fundraisers/Events: Run for Cover (September 28, 2008), details to be determined. We will be having various other events that are to be determined as of yet. The tasks would be dependent upon the event. Volunteers do not need any special skills as they will be provided with training. All student volunteers must be a minimum of 16 years old. Locations will be different for each event.

Talking Talons Youth Leadership, Tijeras N.M. Volunteers needed to repackage bulk food items, accept/sort donated items, assist the public, http://www.storehouseabq.org. Hours of operation are Tuesday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., AND Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to noon. Youth under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Watermelon Mountain Ranch, Rio Rancho. Sophia DiClemente, wmranchnm@aol.com, sophiawmr@aol.com, 980-6354. A no-kill animal rescue that works also with community youth organizations, http://www.wmranch.org. Volunteers needed to interact with animals. Volunteers under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
