Mosquito Fish Distribution

Mosquitofish are now being stocked at distribution points listed below.  The fish are once again available to the public for free.  Those interested in obtaining fish are still advised to call ahead to the distributor(s) they intend to visit to ensure that there are still fish in stock.  We anticipate that fish will be available throughout the remainder of the summer.  Once again we apologize for the delays in fish distribution this year.

The Vector-Borne & Zoonotic Disease Division facility includes a large pond that is used to stock fish that feed on mosquito larvae.  The “mosquitofish” is called Gambusia affinis, and is an effective form of biological control for larvae and pupae of mosquitoes.  The larval and pupal stages of the mosquito life cycle are entirely aquatic.  Gambusia can be used in permanent water sources such as ponds, fountains, bird baths and ditches to control mosquito breeding.

Mosquitofish are known for their hardiness, and their ability to rapidly multiply.  They bear live young, which means that the survival rate of offspring is quite high.  A single female can produce 3-4 broods per year, between 60-100 young per brood.  Gambusia overwinter in mud, and can survive in harsh conditions, including extreme temperatures and high levels of pollution and salinity.  These fish can be mixed with other species of fish in ornamental ponds, although they are likely to be preyed on by Koi.

Mosquitofish are distributed FREE to the public as a service of Vector-Borne & Zoonotic Disease Division.  Fish are distributed at several points around the city.  The staff at each distribution point will provide citizens with an appropriate number of fish depending on the size of the water source to be controlled.  Remember, the fish will continually breed in their new home, so only a few are necessary at first.  If you are going to pick up fish, you should bring your own bucket.  If the fish will be in transit for more than an hour, it is advised that the bucket be kept cool in order to ensure that the fish will survive.

The current distribution points are listed below.  It is recommended that citizens call these distributors first to make sure that they have fish on hand.  We make every effort to keep all of our distributors stocked with fish, but during periods of high demand the supply may be limited.  If you are a local business with fish-stocking resources, and would like to become a Gambusia distributor, send us an email .
