Tuberculosis (TB) is the leading cause of death due to an infectious agent
in the world. Since 1985, the incidence of TB in the general U.S. population
has increased 14 percent, reversing a 30-year downward trend. Outbreaks have
occurred in hospitals, correctional institutions, homeless shelters, nursing
homes, and residential care facilities for AIDS patients. Specific control
measures recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and
required by OSHA has contributed to a drop in TB cases in 1994 and 1995.
In February 1996, OSHA issued CPL 2.106, Enforcement Procedures and
Scheduling for Occupational Exposure to Tuberculosis to protect workers
against the hazards of TB.
