NIBIB Research Supplement to Promote Clinical Resident Research Experiences

NIBIB Research Supplements to Promote Clinical Resident Research Experiences provide a 1-2 year period of research experience for physicians in a residency program through supplements to existing NIBIB grant awards. The program targets applicants who have demonstrated the potential for productive research in an area of interest to the candidate and of relevance to the mission of the NIBIB.

Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award (K08)

The Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award (K08) provides support and "protected time" for an intensive, supervised research career development experience to individuals with a clinical doctoral degree (e.g., M.D., D.D.S., D.M.D., D.O., D.C., O.D., N.D., D.V.M., Pharm.D., or Ph.D. in clinical disciplines) committed to a career in laboratory or clinically-based research in biomedical imaging and bioengineering.

Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award (K23)

Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Awards (K23) provide support for research-oriented clinicians to develop independent research skills and gain experience in advanced methods and experimental approaches needed to become an independent investigator conducting patient-oriented research. It is the specific goal of these awards to increase the pool of clinical researchers who can conduct patient-oriented studies, capitalizing on the discoveries of biomedical research and translating them to clinical settings. For the purposes of this award, patient-oriented research is defined as research conducted with human subjects (or on material of human origin such as tissues, specimens and cognitive phenomena for which an investigator directly interacts with human subjects).

Midcareer Investigator Award in Patient-Oriented Research (K24)

Midcareer Investigator Awards in Patient-Oriented Research (K24) provide support for clinician investigators to allow them protected time to devote to patient-oriented research and to act as research mentors primarily for clinical residents, clinical fellows and/or junior clinical faculty. These awards are primarily intended for clinician investigators who are at the Associate Professor level or are functioning at that rank in an academic setting or equivalent non-academic setting, and who have an established record of independent, peer-reviewed Federal or private research grant funding. This award is intended to advance both the research and the mentoring endeavors of outstanding patient-oriented investigators.

NIH Loan Repayment Program (LRP)

The Loan Repayment Program is a vital component of our nation's efforts to attract health professionals to careers in clinical research. Through this program, doctoral-level clinical researchers with domestic nonprofit or U.S government (Federal, state or local) funding must conduct clinical research for 50% or more of their total level of effort for an average of at least 20 hours per week during each quarterly service period. In exchange for a two-year commitment to their clinical research career, NIH will repay up to $35,000 per year of qualified educational debt, pay an additional 39% of the repayments to cover Federal taxes, and may reimburse state taxes that result from these payments.
