NEWS ON NOTICES

The National NAGPRA Program is in the process of notifying those museums and federal agencies with draft documents submitted in 2002 and prior, but which have not yet given their approval to publish a notice, that the pending document will be deemed withdrawn if not promptly approved by them as a notice to be published. To be in compliance with the law, those museums and federal agencies are encouraged to refresh their efforts, in consultation with tribes, and submit notices for publication.

About NAGPRA Notices
As part of the NAGPRA compliance process, the National NAGPRA program assists museums and Federal agencies in publishing Notices of Inventory Completion and Notices of Intent to Repatriate in the Federal Register.

A Notice of Inventory Completion is published when a museum or Federal agency has made a determination of cultural affiliation for Native American human remains and associated funerary objects in its possession or control. By law these were due November 1995.

A Notice of Intent to Repatriate is published when a museum or Federal agency, in consultation with tribes, receives, reviews, and accepts a claim by a tribe for sacred objects, unassociated funerary objects, or objects of cultural patrimony.

A Notice of Intended Disposition is published in newspapers by the Federal agency official responsible for cultural items excavated or removed from Federal lands. The responsible Federal agency official must send copies of published Notices of Intended Disposition to National NAGPRA.

Notice Templates
Notice templates are available in Word, and may be downloaded for use in preparing draft Federal Register notices to be sent to National NAGPRA. Draft Federal Register notices may be sent via mail or delivery service as an electronic file on disk and should also be sent as an e-mail attachment to Jaime Lavallee.

Many of the terms that are used in Notices of Inventory Completion and Notices of Intent to Repatriate have specialized meanings under NAGPRA. Such terms include:
