Captain's Corner

Home, finally! It's great to be in Alameda and have the crew reunited with families and friends. We've had a long trek from the Gulf of Mexico, up the east coast of the US, down through the Caribbean and the Panama Canal and up the west coast of central and north America.

On 23 July, our homecoming day, we had the unique pleasure of passing USCGC EAGLE just in front of San Francisco in the Bay, on a bright, clear and calm day – it was quite a sight to see the oldest and the newest cutters together!

On 04 August we conducted a formal ceremony at Coast Guard Island in Alameda, CA, that placed BERTHOLF in Commission. Thousands of spectators watched as the crew smartly marched aboard and manned the ship when directed by the Ship’s Sponsor, Mrs. Meryl Justin Chertoff.

The crew is now enjoying their richly deserved time off before returning to the ship to begin "normal" shipboard routine – something they have all been yearning for, for more than two years now.

We will be active while inport, conducting much needed maintenance and some additional installations; after that short period, we'll get underway in the North Pacific to continue conducting testing and certifications of electronic systems.
