Students from Pueblo Triumph in Colorado Science Bowl

Golden, Colo., Feb. 28, 1998 — Students from Pueblo South High School won top honors at the 1998 Colorado Science Bowl today at Metropolitan State College in Denver. In the final round of rapid fire questions about physics, math, biology, astronomy, chemistry, computers and the earth sciences, students from Pueblo South High School were victorious over Pueblo Centennial High School.

Forty-two student teams from across the state competed in the day-long competition. As the winning team, Pueblo South High School students earned the opportunity to compete in DOE's National Science Bowl in Chevy Chase, Md., May 1-3, where they will go up against winning teams from regional competitions across the nation.

Other schools that survived the morning round robin competitions and made it to the afternoon double elimination contests were: Cherry Creek High School, Englewood; Golden High School, Golden; Boulder High School, Boulder; Pomona High School, Arvada; Douglas County High School, Castle Rock; Arapahoe High School, Littleton; Smoky Hill High School, Aurora; Eaglecrest High School, Aurora; Widefield High School, Colorado Springs; Woodland Park High School, Woodland Park; and Hoehne High School, Hoehne.

The regional competition is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory, DOE's Golden Field Office, DOE's Denver Support Office, DOE's Rocky Flats Field Office, Kaiser-Hill and Metropolitan State College.

DOE began the National Science Bowl eight years ago to help stimulate interest in science and math. The competition has evolved into one of the Energy Department's premier educational programs.
