Students from Smoky Hill High School Triumph in Colorado Science Bowl

Golden, Colo. — Students from Smoky Hill High School won top honors today at the Colorado Science Bowl for the third year in a row. In the final round of rapid-fire questions and answers about physics, math, biology, astronomy, chemistry, computers and the earth sciences, Smoky Hill High School was victorious over Pueblo Centennial High School.

Thirty-nine student teams from across the state competed in the daylong competition at the Colorado School of Mines. As the winning team, Smoky Hill High School students earned the opportunity to compete in the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) National Science Bowl® April 29 - May 3 in the Washington, D.C. area, where they will go up against winning teams from regional competitions across the nation.

Other schools that survived the morning round robin competitions and made it to the afternoon double elimination contests were: Eaglecrest High School, Northglenn High School, Christian Fellowship High School, Pueblo South High School, Lakewood High School, Palmer High School, Coronado High School, Legacy High School, Standley Lake High School and Faith Christian High School.

The competition is sponsored by DOE's Golden Field Office and National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Midwest Research Institute and Battelle.

DOE began the National Science Bowl 14 years ago to help stimulate interest in science and math. The competition has evolved into one of the Energy Department's premier education programs.
