Golden, Colo., Feb. 12, 2000 - Students from Grand Junction High School won top honors at the Colorado Science Bowl today at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden. In the final round of rapid-fire questions about physics, math, biology, astronomy, chemistry, computers and the earth sciences, students from Grand Junction were victorious over one of two teams from Douglas County High School.
Twenty-six student teams from rural communities and metropolitan areas across the state competed in the daylong competition. As the winning team, Grand Junction students earned the opportunity to compete in the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) National Science Bowl May 5-8 in the Washington, D.C. area, where they will go up against winning teams from regional competitions across the nation.
Other schools that survived the morning round robin competitions and made it to the afternoon double elimination contests were: Christian Fellowship School, Lakewood; Pueblo Central High School; George Washington High School, Denver; Lewis-Palmer High School, Monument, and Eaglecrest High School, Aurora. Douglas County High School entered two teams, both of which finished in the final eight.
DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Golden Field Office sponsored the regional competition.
DOE began the National Science Bowl 10 years ago to help stimulate interest in science and math. The competition has evolved into one of the Energy Department's premier education programs.
