For more than 120 years the Oregon State Hospital has been Oregons primary mental health facility. In 2003 Governor Kulongoski established a mental health task force to identify problems in Oregons mental health system and recommend solutions. That inquiry and those that followed found that many aspects of the current mental health care system in Oregon, especially many buildings on the Oregon State Hospital Salem campus, are badly outdated. The Oregon State Hospital replacement project is an effort to revitalize and modernize Oregons total system of mental health care. The project encompasses new, facilities, treatment methods, staff, technology and administrative techniques, all designed to make Oregons system among the best in the nation.
