INFORMATION BULLETIN 01-38 Sustainable Fisheries Division 907-586-7228 March 29, 2001 8:45 A.M. NMFS PROHIBITS DIRECTED FISHING FOR POLLOCK WITHIN THE SHELIKOF STRAIT CONSERVATION AREA IN THE GULF OF ALASKA The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is prohibiting directed fishing for pollock within the Shelikof Strait conservation area in the Gulf of Alaska, effective 12 noon, Alaska local time, March 31, 2001, according to James W. Balsiger, Administrator, Alaska Region, NMFS. This action is necessary to prevent exceeding the B season allowance of the pollock total allowable catch in this area. This action is issued pursuant to 50 CFR 679.22(b)(3)(iii)(A). The Shelikof Strait conservation area is defined as the area bound by straight lines and shoreline connecting the following coordinates in the following order: 58�' N lat. 153�' W long.; 58�' N lat. 152�' W long.; and, the intersection of 152�' W long. with Afognak Island; aligned counterclockwise around the shoreline of Afognak, Kodiak, and Raspberry Islands to 57�' N lat. 154�' W long.; 56�' N lat. 154�' W long.; 56�' N lat. 155�' W long.; 56�' N lat. 155�' W long.; 56�' N lat. 157�' W long.; and, the intersection of 157�' W long. with the Alaska Peninsula. After the effective date of this closure the maximum retainable bycatch amounts at 50 CFR 679.20(e) and (f) apply at any time during a trip. This information bulletin only provides notice of a regulatory change.
