"Nobody could have known 100 years ago that Pearl Harbor would become one of the most influential shipyards in naval history," said Governor Lingle as she praised the shipyard's century of incredible service to the nation.

From the early 1900s, to World War II, to the Vietnam War and to the present day, Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard has played a pivotal role in military history.

Governor Lingle highlighted the shipyard's strategic value and benefit to the people and economy.

"Your shipyard - our shipyard - provides security for the entire region, State of Hawai`i and United States," she said.

The Governor also shared the shipyard's unique impact on the state through its work to promote an innovation economy.

"Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard is teeming with advanced technology, innovation and engineering," Governor Lingle said. "I appreciate apprenticeships and other programs that develop a highly-skilled workforce, and especially your mentorship of Hawai`i's youth."

Shipyard workers mentored students on robotics teams from local high schools, including Nanakuli, Radford, Campbell, McKinley, Moanalua and Farrington High Schools, as well as Punahou and Kamehameha Schools and Sacred Hearts Academy.  Thanks to the mentors' hard work, three of the teams (McKinley, Radford and Sacred Hearts) attended, and competed well, at the championships in Atlanta.

The shipyard will hold its official centennial celebration on May 13, the day in 1908 that Congress passed an act officially creating the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard, Territory of Hawai`i.
