ASHRAE, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, is an international organization focused on advancing the arts and sciences of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration for the public's benefit.
ASHRAE writes standards that set uniform methods of testing and rating equipment and establish accepted practices for the HVAC and refrigeration industry worldwide. For example, ASHRAE sets the standards on the design of energy efficient buildings. Other ASHRAE activities include research programs, research projects, technical programs that range from classroom teaching to international symposiums, and publications.
ASHRAE's scope of interest includes proper ventilation of buildings. The organization studies and recommends ventilation rates for different conditions and building uses. They review methods such as demand-controlled ventilation in their interpretation of ventilation standards. Members of ASHRAE also provide interpretations that are used by industry to discuss, understand, and implement the standards.
