Technical Abstract: Because conservation tillage practices typically increase infiltration, they have the potential to increase agrichemical leaching and contribute to unforeseen impacts on groundwater quality and on surface waters in landscapes where rates of lateral subsurface drainage are high. The later is the case in much of the Coastal Plain. Over the past nine years we applied the herbicide fluometuron to cotton crops produced under strip- and conventional-tillage management and examined losses of the parent compound and its principal degradate in surface runoff and subsurface drainage at a study site in Tift County Georgia. Implications of findings will be discussed.
