It's Up to You!
The publication of It’s Up to You! is the culmination of over two years’ worth of work by many, many people.

Several factors pointed to the necessity of a curriculum written specifically for juveniles of middle school age: 1) Every year over a thousand youths under the age of eighteen use and misuse fire in Oregon; 2) Most of the fires occurring in the home are the result of human behavior, the things that people do…or don’t do; and 3) Youths in middle school are on the way to becoming adults. Education about fire-safe practices can empower them to act more safely and responsibly.

It’s Up to You! is built around four core concepts:
•     Accurate knowledge about fire is essential.
•     Human-caused fires can be prevented.
•     Fire and life safety skills can be learned.
•     Fire and life safety is a personal responsibility.

With the publication of this curriculum, the Office of State Fire Marshal is taking a proactive approach to teaching youths in middle school about the reality of fire, how the media influences their attitudes and behaviors toward fire, the physical and legal consequences of misusing fire and how to make responsible and safe decisions in fire prevention and survival. The developmental stage of middle school youths makes this an appropriate and crucial stage to teach analytical thinking and decision-making skills around fire and life safety practices.
