About Us
Heritage Programs works with Oregonians to help preserve and protect Oregon's heritage and historic resources.
Vision
The Heritage Programs division of the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD)supports local preservation efforts through the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), which, among its other services, oversees nominations of Oregon's significant historic properties to the National Register of Historic Places and maintains a database of all listed historic resources.

Both the Oregon Heritage Commission and the Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries are integral parts of OPRD's Heritage Programs and are directly involved in a broad range of heritage-related activities statewide that includes grant funding opportunities to local communities and organizations. Heritage Programs is also the home of the Oregon Historic Trails Advisory Council and has representation on the Historic Columbia River Highway Advisory Committee.

The division is also committed to the protection of Oregon’s cultural and historic resources throughout the Oregon State Parks system by providing its expertise to Parks planning and interpretive programs. Heritage Programs is active each day in helping OPRD achieve Goals 1,4 and 5 as part of the department’s overall strategic plan, Target 2014

Each of the various program entities, boards and commissions under the purview of Heritage Programs maintain working partnerships with other state agencies, local heritage and preservation organizations, and several national organizations.
