The NGDC Marine Geology Inventory provides searchable access to all marine geology data archived by, and available through NGDC, regardless of data format.

Marine geologic data types include descriptions and all kinds of analyses of marine sediment and hard rock samples, including paleontology and logging data. Parameters include collecting institution, ship, cruise, and sample identifier, date, latitude/longitude, water depth in corrected meters, type of sampling device, and type(s) of descriptive/analytical data available through NGDC for each sample in a report, data file, etc.

Inventory information is included for several hundred reports/data sets including data from over 130,000 seafloor samples. Data sources include academic institutions, NOAA, other US government agencies, foreign countries, and a few private companies. If you have problems directly searching the inventory using a web browser, please call/email NGDC with search requests. Searches are performed free of charge.

Offline Data

Microfilm and slides may be ordered from NGDC on a cost-recovery basis. Although digital data are available for direct download, some data sets are also available as CD-ROM products. Links to downloadable data are provided from within searches. Scanned images of paper data reports in .pdf are available through the inventory.
