Research Project:
APPALACHIAN LAND USE AND LANDSCAPE DYNAMICS
Location: Appalachian Farming Systems Research Center, Beaver, WV
Project Number: 1932-21630-004-03
Project Type:
Specific Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Sep 29, 2006
End Date: Aug 29, 2009
Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is to develop spatial tools to be used in modeling environmental impacts of grazing systems in watersheds characterized by mosaics of land uses, landscape elements, and biophysical gradients. The major component of this research effort is to develop a GIS data base to be used in modeling environmental impacts of grazing systems in the central Appalachian region.
Approach:
The approach of this research will be to: (a) Bring land use, topography, hydrography, soils, climate, and geology data together into a geographic information system (GIS) database for the Kanawha/New River drainage basin from its confluence with the Ohio River and the Monongahela River Basin from its confluence with the Allegheny River; (b) Perform GIS analyses to assess patterns of land use and landscapes; and (c) Produce graphic displays of the database and analysis as digital files and as full color large format hardcopy.
