This is a tremendous opportunity to draw attention to family literacy among a vast audience. I will speak on Monday, July 31 (Opening Night) at approximately 9:45 p.m. Other scheduled speakers that night include teachers, students, General Colin Powell and Laura Bush, First Lady of Texas. I have exercised every caution in deciding to make this speech and did so with the advisement of the NCFL Board of Directors. It is very important for the organization and other interested parties to understand that I will make this presentation as an individual advocate for family literacy, not as President of NCFL. Furthermore, the organization’s resources will not be used to make this opportunity possible. These distinctions ensure that I am within the acceptable boundaries as defined by the IRS. I have extended an offer to make the same presentation on family literacy at the Democratic National Convention.
