George Ella Lyon has written two wonderful books of 3-4 page stories, not
very difficult reading level, with very authentic voices--Choices and the
second, More Choices. The second is self published because the issues are
controversial but excellent for discussions of emotional subjects like
abortion and family planning, working and unemployment, poverty, alcoholism,
abuse etc. Choices is published by the University of Kentucky Press for
around $5-$6. Both books have been used in programs in Ohio with good
feedback.

Subject: [NIFL-FAMILY:2903] book group in a family literacy program

I am getting ready to start a book group (for women) in a Domestic Violence
Shelter Family Literacy Program. Our literacy program is a new effort and
so the women and their reading levels are unknown at this point. Any
suggestions on a good book to start with? or any other general suggestions
for those who may have done this successfully or unsuccessfully before?
Thanks.
