Dear-
Silvia, Susan, Ella, Clara and Darnell thank you for your message. You have
shown in your comments some of what is involved in the evolution of
individual empowerment. Those actions you listed that can be made once a
person has learned how to read are exactly what many of us literacy workers
think about when we argue that reading fosters liberation/empowerment.
Again, thank you for your contribution!

We are group of home care workers improving our reading, writing and math
skills in a union based workplace education class. Together we have written
a response to the discussion question regarding women and reading. This is
our response:

It is important for women to be able to read so they can improve their
standards of life.If they can read, they can improve their skills. If they
improve their skills, they can get better jobs, ike construction jobs, that
men get.
It's important to be able to read so so nobody can cheat you. It's
important to be able to understand your paycheck, your checkbook, your bills
and your union contract. Women are heads of households so they need to know
how to manage finances.
If they can read, they will be in position to help other women who are
less fortunate than them. Some men won't take the time to help a woman. A
woman would be more likely to help a woman who is in a difficult situation,
like an abusive home. Woman who can read can help other women learn to read
or read better.
