I have really enjoyed follow the news and views in this discussion group since I joined several weeks ago. While it is not exactly in my field, much of the information overlaps and has been both valuable and enlightening.

I work in the central administrative office of a state agency subdivision that handles eligibility and related programs for TANF, food stamps and medical coverage. Our case workers are responsible for determining eligibility, providing ongoing benefits as well as case management services for recipients who are required to participate in work activities under the welfare reform laws.

A co-worker and I have recently been assigned set up a Technical Assistance Unit to assist field offices with the many issues that changes associated with welfare reform have brought about. The broad duties of this unit will be to:

>Make on-site visits in an advisory role to aid local offices solve specific problems.

>Provide fact-finding services needed to develop or carry out local efforts to improve services for our clientele.

>Promote promising practices found in local offices or other States.

>Encourage working with other agencies and community organizations to increase the effectiveness of local efforts.

>Work with local offices to set up workshops, seminars or other programs on issues of specific interest.

We are involving our field offices in developing the specifics of this unit. In addition, I am looking for any examples of units in other states that may perform a similar function. I have found many similar units in education, mental health, substance abuse treatment, and foundation grant programs. These have been helpful, but I would like to find out if any such units exist specifically in our particular field.

I am also looking for any discussion lists on the Internet comprising professionals involved in the broad range of duties that makes up eligibility and work programs. I have searched the 'net and found many excellent resources both government and other groups that provide current program information, proposed changes, legal challenges and in-depth research on the effects of welfare reform. I have found several good discussion lists on related topics, such as this list on workplace literacy, social work, mental health, domestic violence, etc. These contain a topics that we encounter as we try to help move people from welfare to work, but I am wondering if anyone knows of any lists that are more focused on the everyday concerns of TANF, food stamps, medicaid and welfare to work issues.

I would appreciate any leads you could give me.
