Hi Donna,
The VESL/Workplace Clearinghouse is sponsored through OTAN (Outreach
and Technical Assistance Network), which is a staff development
initiative of the California Dept. of Ed. Their website is
http://www.otan.dni.us/
You have to be a member to access the resources, but being a member
just means filling out a form. The site is searchable and has lots of
resources relevant to adult literacy, voc. ed., ESL, ABE, etc. I
wasn't able to ascertain whether the VESL Clearinghouse database is on
there. I didn't find it, but I will check on this and post the answer.

Are you aware of the VESL/Workplace Clearinghouse? There is a whole
page of low literacy medical materials in the table of contents. A lot
is geared to second language speakers, but some may be of use to your
