Even if an employer's first reaction is to think of dumping older or less skilled employees, they can't afford to anymore. I run a learning lab in a glass manufacturing plant. I also help with interviewing and hiring entry level employees. We can not get the employees we need, we have to rely on training the ones we have. I think this is the best solution by far, but many people here have had to learn the hard way. For example, by promoting people into positions they can't do because they can't read. This type of situation has been difficult for everyone involved. It has brought to light the reality of the situation though. Also with ISO 9000 on the horizon, all of our employees will need to be somewhat computer literate, able to read and understand written materials. We are not there now, but at least we are working on it. Just had to get my two cents in. Heidi LoRash-Neuenschwander Learning Lab Instructor Techneglas, Inc. Columbus, OH hlorash@techneglas.com
