IRA, while not known for its commitment to adult literacy, has scheduled sessions applicable to adults, listed below for your information (others on family literacy are also available): - Diane Rosenthal (Literacy Assistance Center) is chairing a symposium on Teaching Adults in the Context of Their Lives; - Christina Jagger (New Readers Press) is presenting a session on Empowering Adult Literacy Learners Through Balanced Instruction; - Betty Yarborough (Old Dominion U) is presenting a session on Implementing Successful Volunteer Initiatives in Adult/Adolescent and Other Literacy Programs; - John Elkins (University of Queensland, Australia) will chair a symposium called Towards 2000: Family Literacy and Technology, An International Perspective; - Barbara McDonald (San Diego State U) will chair a research colloquium on Passports to Paradise: The Struggle to Teach and to Learn on the Margins of Adult Education; - Barb Van Horn (Penn State U) will present a session on Evaluating Family Literacy Programs: Reviewing the Past and Planning the Future; - Dolores Perin (Colunbia U) and Rosalie Fink (Lesley College) will present a research report on Adult Literacy; - Georganna Ahlfors (WorkLIT Associates) will present on Identifying Literacy Skills for the Workplace; Hal Beder and Patsy Medina (Rutgers U) will present on Adult Literacy Instruction and Classroom Culture. AND, for those of us who want to keep adult literacy alive in IRA, we have the Adult Literacy Special Interest Group (ALSIG). We have a great session planned, including such notable speakers as Nickie Askov (Penn State U), Larry Mikulecky (Indiana University), Sally Beaty (Intelecom), Chris McFadden (READ/San Diego), Deb Young (Literacy Action Center), Miriam Burt (Center for Applied Linguistics), and Leslie Shelton (South San Franciso Public Library).
