Dear subscribers,

The annual Internation Reading Association (IRA) Conference will be held in
San Diego, CA from May 3-6. IRA, while not known for its commitment to
adult literacy, has scheduled sessions applicable to adults, listed below
for your information (others on family literacy are also available):

- Diane Rosenthal (Literacy Assistance Center) is chairing a symposium on
Teaching Adults in the Context of Their Lives;
- Christina Jagger (New Readers Press) is presenting a session on
Empowering Adult Literacy Learners Through Balanced Instruction;
- Betty Yarborough (Old Dominion U) is presenting a session on Implementing
Successful Volunteer Initiatives in Adult/Adolescent and Other Literacy
Programs;
- John Elkins (University of Queensland, Australia) will chair a symposium
called Towards 2000: Family Literacy and Technology, An International
Perspective;
- Barbara McDonald (San Diego State U) will chair a research colloquium on
Passports to Paradise: The Struggle to Teach and to Learn on the Margins of
Adult Education;
- Barb Van Horn (Penn State U) will present a session on Evaluating Family
Literacy Programs: Reviewing the Past and Planning the Future;
- Dolores Perin (Colunbia U) and Rosalie Fink (Lesley College) will present
a research report on Adult Literacy;
- Georganna Ahlfors (WorkLIT Associates) will present on Identifying
Literacy Skills for the Workplace;
Hal Beder and Patsy Medina (Rutgers U) will present on Adult Literacy
Instruction and Classroom Culture.

AND, for those of us who want to keep adult literacy alive in IRA, we have
the Adult Literacy Special Interest Group (ALSIG). We have a great session
planned, including such notable speakers as Nickie Askov (Penn State U),
Larry Mikulecky (Indiana University), Sally Beaty (Intelecom), Chris
McFadden (READ/San Diego), Deb Young (Literacy Action Center), Miriam Burt
(Center for Applied Linguistics), and Leslie Shelton (South San Franciso
Public Library).
