The US Department of Veterans Affairs Regional Office in Portland Oregon delivers benefits through compensation, pension, education, and insurance programs. Veterans and their beneficiaries throughout Oregon receive well over $490 million annually as a result of these programs. In addition, the Regional Office provides rehabilitation counseling and training to disabled veterans and their families. Through personal visits, outreach, and phone calls, the Portland Regional Office provides general assistance and information some 180,000 times each year.

Our primary focus is on the methods and manner through which we provide the best support possible to veterans and their families. During the last 2 years, we have experienced a significant increase in the number of veterans that require service in the areas of disability compensation, rehabilitation, and employment assistance. Some of the special programs and services that are available to the veterans in our service area are:

Seamless Transition

Through a strong liaison with Reserve and National Guard units we provide benefit information to those who are returning from overseas deployments. During the last 24 months, more than 2000 Guard and Reserve members have been briefed by our staff resulting in a significant increase in the number of Oregon veterans and their survivors receiving benefits.

Homeless Veterans Initiatives

The Portland office has participated in the Homeless Veterans' Stand Downs for almost 15 years. This program assists homeless veterans with medical care, legal assistance, clothing and shelter.

Native American Veteran Outreach

We provide ongoing support to Native American veterans living on reservations across Oregon through education, housing services, and other assistance as needed. During 2006, the Portland Office partnered with Portland State University, the largest higher education institution in Oregon, to develop community projects to assist in our outreach efforts on the reservations.

We strive to provide each veteran and their family members the best possible service through caring, compassionate assistance to the maximum extent possible.
