SENATORS THOMPSON AND COCHRAN TO HOLD HEARING
ON FINANCIAL OUTLOOK OF THE POSTAL SERVICE
WASHINGTON – Senate Governmental Affairs
Committee Chairman Fred Thompson (R-TN) and Subcommittee on
International Security, Proliferation, and Federal Services
Chairman Thad Cochran (R-MS) announced that a joint hearing will
be held on Tuesday, May 15, 2001 regarding the financial outlook
of the United States Postal Service (USPS).

The wide fluctuation in financial estimates made
by USPS recently prompted members of the Governmental Affairs
Committee to request an independent assessment of the Service by
the General Accounting Office (GAO). Chairman Thompson, Ranking
Member Joseph Lieberman (D-CT), Subcommittee on International
Security, Proliferation, and Federal Services Chairman Thad
Cochran (R-MS), and Subcommittee Ranking Member Daniel Akaka
(D-HI) requested
the GAO report, and the findings will be presented tomorrow by
GAO Comptroller General David Walker.
