Dr. Barbara W. K. Yee was born in Honolulu, Hawaii and comes from a Chinese-Hawaiian heritage. She completed her B.A. psychology at the University of Hawaii and went to the University of Denver to obtain her M.A. and Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology, with a specialty in adult development and aging. Since the fall of Saigon in 1975, she has been interested in how middle aged and elderly Southeast Asian refugees cope with the loss of OWH Homeland and culture. Her current research examines how acculturation influences health beliefs and lifestyle practices across three generations of Vietnamese adults living in the U.S.
Dr. Yee is a Professor and Chair, with the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, in Honolulu, Hawaii. She is honored as a fellow of the Gerontological Society of America in 1998, and American Psychological Association in 1999. Dr. Yee was awarded the Joseph C. Valley Gerontological Professional of 1999 in recognition of her work in ethnogerontology by the University of Texas- Houston Center on Aging.
