The Standards Group is responsible for maintaining the Highway Design Manual. This group provides technical support and is part of Roadway Engineering.

The Oregon Standard Drawings were developed jointly by ODOT and APWA for use on public work projects in Oregon. The Standards group maintains files and leads the development of updates to current drawings and the creation of new drawings. Fifty five revised Standard Drawings are scheduled for release in Feb 2007.

Fifteen Technical Bulletins have been drafted to revise Design Standards in the Highway Design Manual. Use the link below to view recent Tech Bulletins related to Roadway Engineering.

The statewide Roadway Conference was held April 16th at the Keizer Renaissance Inn. Over 100 designers, specification writers, drafters, and other Roadway members attended the conference. Ten topics, seven presenters, and two panels comprised the agenda. The guest speaker was Cathy Nelson, Technical Services Manager/Chief Engineer. The conference featured informative topics and was a forum to meet members of the five Region Technical Centers, Headquarters, and FHWA. Many of the discussions during the breaks and lunch focused on design issues and projects of interest. We will be reviewing the Conference Evaluation forms and begin plans for the next conference.

The Pedestrian and Bicycle Grant Program is a competitive grant program that provides approximately $5 million dollars every two years to Oregon cities, counties and ODOT regional and district offices for design and construction of pedestrian and bicycle facilities.

This program designates and maintains Corridor Management Plans for State and National Byways.

National Scenic Byway funds are available from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The funding program is administered in Oregon by the Oregon Department of Transportation. Qualifying projects must be along an Oregon Scenic Byway or Tour Route. This is a reimbursable program, not a grant program. Funds must be expended in advance of repayment through the program.

Value Engineering is the systematic application of recognized techniques by multi-disciplined team which identifies the function of a product or service; establishes a worth for that function; generates alternatives through the use of creative thinking; and provides the needed functions, reliably, at the lowest overall cost. Highway projects on the National Highway system that exceed 20 million dollars must have a Value Engineering Study.
