Map of Project Location

Like the first pilot project, Project #2 was carried out as a joint effort of the Fort Chaffee Redevelopment Authority, the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality, and EPA. Fort Chaffee Redevelopment Authority was the site for the second pilot research project for the continued testing of the Alternative Asbestos Control Method in July 2007. The Project #2 site was located between a number of buildings that were predominately vacant or used as warehouses for small businesses.

Project #2 occurred on a weekend to assure no public exposure. The area was secured during the time of the demolition. The building had a clearance of approximately 200 feet from the nearest occupied site The 1536 square foot building was two stories high and surrounded largely by pavement, as you can see in the photo on this webpage.

AACS Project 2 Building

The asbestos-containing material on the Project #2 building consisted of about 980 suare feet of residential-grade transite shingles that contained 30-percent chrysotile asbestos. In addition, about 1550 square feet of commercial-grade transite panels on the exterior of the building, also contained 30-percent chrysotile asbestos. The asbestos-containing materials for the first pilot project were positive wallboard systems and vinyl asbestos tile.

A technical team of EPA scientists and engineers was assembled to conduct a peer review and further refine the pilot project protocol as necessary. A site-specific Quality Assurance Project Plan was developed. An independent peer review – including an opportunity for public comment – will be carried out on the results of Pilot Project #2.

For more information on peer review and public involvement go to public information page.
