Tanzania: Agreement Signed on Trafficking in Persons

On May 22, 2006, The United Republic of Tanzania, represented by Foreign Minister Asha Rose Migiro, and the United States , represented by Under Secretary for Democracy and Global Affairs Paula Dobriansky, signed an amendment to a Letter of Agreement on law enforcement to implement a $1.3 million project to combat trafficking in persons in Tanzania . This funding will bring the total of U.S. Government assistance to Tanzania under President Bush's Anti-Trafficking Initiative to $2.9 million under the President's Anti-Trafficking Initiative.

This funding supports the work of international and non-governmental organizations as well as government agencies in Tanzania to provide medical, legal, and counseling services to trafficking victims. Through the Amended Letter of Agreement, training and technical assistance for judicial officers to strengthen law enforcement capacity building will be carried out. A comprehensive anti-trafficking law with strict penalties to facilitate the prosecution and punishment of traffickers will also be drafted.
