Swine flu: Wildlife Trust in Action
Wildlife Trust scientists specialize in analyzing the causes, origins and spread of emerging diseases like swine flu. Swine flu is the latest in a series of emerging diseases that threaten global health. These include drug resistant microbes (e.g. XDR TB), diseases spread by vectors such as mosquitoes (e.g. West Nile virus), and those that come from wildlife and livestock.
This latter group, called 'Zoonoses' include some of the biggest threats we have seen to global health: HIV/AIDS, which originated in chimpanzees hunted for bushmeat in Africa; SARS, emerged from bats in China and the natural reservoir of the SARS virus was found by a team including Wildlife Trust scientists; West Nile virus, which is carried by birds and affects people in the U.S. every year.
