Preparations are underway to remove the New Carissa, shipwrecked in 1999 on an Oregon beach near Coos Bay. Protective matting has been installed on the seaside dunes to provide a stable work surface for salvage crews. A cable car will ferry workers and equipment several hundred yards out to the wreckage in the surf.
The following images of the New Carissa staging area were taken by Jim Brende of the Bureau of Land Management about May 13, 2008, prior to removal of the Carissa wreckage from the North Spit beach.
