Wetland Planning Assistance to Cities and Counties
Goals
The Wetlands Program works closely with local governments and the Department of Land Conservation and Development (DLCD).
Local governments must include protection for "significant" wetlands as required by statewide land use planning Goals 5 (Natural Resources), 16 (Estuaries) and 17 (Coastal Shorelands).
The Department provides both technical and planning assistance to local governments for wetland inventories and planning.
Wetland program staff work directly with local governments, private consultants and citizens on wetland planning tasks.
Wetland Land Use Notification To DSL
Cities and counties are required to check their Local Wetlands Inventory (LWI) map or the National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) map and notify the Department of applications for activities that might impact a mapped wetland.
DSL's wetland program staff reviews the information submitted and additional maps, and within 30 days notifies the local government, the applicant, and/or the landowner if a state removal-fill permit may be required. This local-state coordination helps alert landowners and developers to the possible need for a wetland delineation or state permit, and helps to prevent inadvertant violations.
