Stara Zagora Supports Its Roma Craftsmen

On October 31, 2005, six Roma craftsmen from the Technitari Union in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria received free equipment and instruments for maintenance and development of their traditional crafts from the local Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The Technitari Union was established in 2004 for the purpose of integrating the ethnic communities in Bulgaria by preserving their spiritual culture and their traditional crafts.

The initiative was funded by the United States Agency for International Development through its Community Fund program. In this program, local communities develop projects and raise resources for their implementation. USAID matches the resources raised through its community fund program implemented by Counterpart International. The Technitari Union project is an excellent combination of creating economic opportunities and preserving ethnic identity.
