The King County Treasury Section will mail property tax statements to county residents on Feb. 14, 2002. With the average house in King County valued at $287,000 and the average tax rate at $11.15 per thousand, the average total property tax bill for King County residents will be $3,200.

While the property tax bill is used as a convenient collection mechanism for property taxes, voter approved levies and charges for other local services, only 11% goes directly to King County's Current Expense (CX) budget.

King County's Current Expense levy is $1.19, or 11% of the total County-wide average levy rate. This is an average of $343 per homeowner. For this the County provides a wide range of discretionary and mandatory services with the CX fund, including: prosecution, courts, and jail services for all felons and youth offenders, criminal identification, parks, elections, and a variety of social and health services. The largest expenditure is criminal justice at over 68% of expenditures. The remaining $2,856 of the property tax bill is received by the state, schools, cities and towns, emergency medical services, the Port of Seattle, and other local services, including fire districts and the library system.

The amount of the property tax paid by residents around the county varies and is provided in the linked table graphic. The average homeowner pays $3,209 in Seattle, of which 11% is dedicated to King County CX. The average homeowner pays $3,422 in Bellevue, of which 13% is dedicated to King County CX. The average homeowner pays $2,592 in Kent, of which 9% is dedicated to King County CX. The average homeowner pays $2,740 in Maple Valley, with 9% dedicated to King County.
