International Film Festival Celebrates People with Disabilities
On November 11, the second annual International Disability Film Festival "Breaking Down Barriers" opened in Moscow. The Festival ran until November 14 at the Salyut Film Theater and is organized by USAID partner Perspektiva, a Russian non-governmental organization that supports people with disabilities. The USAID-funded Assistance to Russian Orphans (ARO) Program is also a festival sponsor along with Russian businesses and city and federal agencies.
After last year’s event, the former Minister of Culture Mikhail Shvydko remarked, “This festival is an extraordinary event that provides an opportunity to change public opinion about people with disabilities, admire their spiritual resilience, their indomitable drive and desire to use their creative abilities.”
This year, the festival showcases more than 100 short and long format films from 16 countries. The films are being judged by a distinguished jury of Russian filmmakers and critics chaired by the documentary filmmaker Sergei Govorukhin. The festival will travel from Moscow to 14 additional locations in Russia and Eurasia.
