Grain:  World Markets and Trade

RICE: WORLD MARKETS AND TRADE

PRICES:

International: Thai quotes are up $9 from last month to $372 per ton, FOB. Vietnam is not quoting prices because of the export ban.

Domestic: U.S. #2/4 long grain milled rice quotes are up from last month to $527 per ton, FOB. The spread between comparable qualities of Thai and U.S. rice is $155 per ton compared to $118 per ton this time last year. California medium grain #1/4 prices are down $15 per ton from last month to $600 per ton, FOB.

TRADE CHANGES FOR 2008

Selected Exporters

  • China is cut 300,000 tons to 1.3 million as a result of restrictive export policies.

  • Pakistan is lowered 300,000 tons to 2.9 million due to logistical problems and trade disruptions.

Selected Importers

  • China is down 100,000 tons to 600,000 due to tighter fragrant supplies out of Thailand.

  • Cote d’Ivoire is lowered 100,000 tons to 650,000 based on reduced exports from China.

  • Cuba is dropped 100,000 tons to 600,000 due to tight supplies in Vietnam.

  • Nigeria is lowered 100,000 tons to 1.6 million because of India’s continued export ban.

TRADE CHANGES FOR 2007

  • Thailand exports are raised 100,000 tons to 9.5 million based on official year-end data
