The Southern Area Health Education Center (SoAHEC) was established in the late 1980's through a collaborative agreement with University of New Mexico (UNM) and the New Mexico State University (NMSU) College of Health and Social Services. The SoAHEC RFCC is coordinating the primary health care services for women in Dona Ana, Grant, Hidalgo and Luna counties with the College of Health and Social Services at NMSU. These efforts support research being undertaken currently on breast and cervical cancer.
Key services and initiatives of the SoAHEC include:
- Partial support for health professions students and residents;
- School-based health career awareness programs for under-represented;
- Coordinating and co-sponsoring continuing education/training programs;
- Coordination of bilingual community health leadership training;
- Environmental health and home safety education;
- Regional health conferences and workshops
- A network of local bilingual trainers/peer educators around diabetes, nutrition, physical activity, and healthy lifestyles.
